click on start>run>msconfig
on the start up tab, disable
all of them
on the services tab, hide all
microsoft services, then
disable what is left.
then reboot to see if there
are any improvement to
performance.

yeah, it can be disabled
while doing a analysis.
one never knows if it is
the cause of the issue
and we don't know what
or how many a.v.'s the
o.p. has or had installed.
in addition, if the a.v. was
active and working, then
the system would have
been disinfected at this
time.

Did the following, only had 1 program and then my Ad Aware wouldn't run. So,
I unstalled it, and re-started my computer, and a window popped up
instructing me to not change the config, but select Normal Start Up . . . .
now what? I have not changed it, but should I, or is this a usual message to
alert us to something?
I'm running XP Pro, IE7, all updates (incl SP3), Ad-Aware (past), AVG,
Windows Defender is ON, HiJackthis, Spyware Blaster. Have not had a virus or
Trojan in years on the Internet, but I "clean" daily, and weekly.
thank you

The message is normal. Go ahead and give it a try. My suggestion would be to
unplug the internet cable or turn off your router if you have one when you do
this. It will prevent from an internet attack because you are shutting off
all the securities. The idea is, if the system boots and runs well, you would
reopen msconfig and turn on one item at a time, rebooting after each, until
you see the problem reaper. Once that happens you know whats causing the
issue. Its a vary painful and long task to troubleshoot but it can be done.
Honestly I'm betting you have too many apps running. I know people will jump
down my throat for saying this but... If you get your system to a good place
where you KNOW that there is no malware / spyware on your system, all you
need to be running is windows defender and a good virus scanner like AVG.
Don't bother running multiple scanners. If your going to use another malware
scanner, be sure to disable windows defender. Layer apon layer of scanners
tends to cause a lot of system issues and always slows down the system. I'm
not telling you to uninstall everything right now. I'm saying to find the
problem first, then pick a good virus scanner and a good malware program
(even if thats windows defender) and just run that. An external firewall, eg.
router, is always a good idea as well. Good luck to you.
note: when you reboot, it will ask if you want to restore your msconfig to
normal or leave it as is, make sure everything works before you make anything
permanent. I would go the other way, turn off only 1 thing at a time until
the system ran correctly but thats me.
