letting you know (as I am) that you ARE being obnoxious.

Assuming WinXP SP3 is installed, which was installed first, SP3 or IE7?
Have you or have you not downloaded and run the Apr-09 version of the
Malicious Software Removal Tool (full scan, not quick scan)?
Have you or have you not attempted to run
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm in Safe Mode with
Networking?
Was McAfee Security Center installed when the machine first got infected or
did you install it after-the-fact?
Did you install Avast before or after the computer got infected?

IE7 is the only thing that is busted that I can see. The malicous

I used the McAfee removal tool to remove it so Avast is the only thing
running.
I'm sure a virus or malware broke IE while trying to stop possible
updates and fixes, it even deleted the restore files.
Its just a damned pain in the bum that I can't reinstall IE7 over the
top.
I have tried all of these things in safe mode as well.
It looking like a format and reinstall now or possibly a repair
install. Its a pity IE is so integrated in the OS and also that other
browsers don't work on the Microsoft online scanner or update sites.
Hi,
Thanks for the help so far, I still have had no luck fixing IE but the
computer is running well except for this IE issue.

As far as I know IE7 was first but I downloaded SP3 again and
installed it over the top to try and fix IE7.
Yes
Yes, the browser asks to let the add on run but left or right click
allows information about the bar, the options are not available.
Already installed
Yes via memory stick.
The browser works after applying the run once fix but all the options
in the advanced tab under tools is missing

Well, you could (1) uninstall SP3 and then (2) uninstall IE7 to see if the
behavior persists in IE6 (I suspect it will) but I think you're going to end
up having to format & reinstall Windows to fix this.
NB: A Repair Install will NOT fix it and a Repair Install should not be
attempted unless IE7 is uninstalled (which would require first uninstalling
SP3). If perchance you've already done a Repair Install without first
uninstalling IE7, a format & clean install is once again you're only
recourse.

Hello,
once again thanks for the advice, I haven't done a repair reinstall so
probably won't. I have tried many fixes but had no luck.
All the usual things don't work, as one last attempt I'll try
uninstalling SP3 and see if IE6 turns up.

Uninstalling SP3 will not return the machine to IE6 but it will allow you to
uninstall IE7.
