Default Unwanted network connection

My computer (with XP SP3) has suddenly starting going on line
(56K dial up modem) of its own free will at random intervals.
I have made no changes to the system.
Any ideas?

Regards,
Richard Harison

You may have a trojan or some other type of malware

run a spyware checker and a virus checker etc

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

My first thought as well...
Scans clean (Outpost Security Suite 2009--definitions just updated)
Also..there does not seem to be any online activity after the connection

There might be some program looking for an update...
possibly even Windows update.

Yup! Thought of that too.
Looked at msconfig...nothing untoward there.
Don't most apps looking for updates tell you that (java, Adobe etc.) as
Windows Update does?
