Default System Slow on Boot-Up?

My system now takes 5-6 minutes to boot-up. The only thing I can
think of is I'm running NAV 2010. What setting(s) in Nav2010 might be
causing the system to be so slow at boot-up - I checked the Settings,
looking for something that might say "scan at startup" but did not see
anything.

Are there other things I can look at to determine why the boot-up is
so slow?

I have a Dell Dim 8300, 4GB memory, WinXP SP3 and plenty of disk
space.

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

This has become an FAQ. If you type the following words into a Google search
box

windows slow startup

then you get a large number of hits. Ignore the commercial stuff, ignore in
particular the registry cleaners but look at the discussion threads that
deal with this issue. If this does not get you anywhere, come back here.

After using AVAST!, ZoneAlarm, SpywareBlaster, MVP's Host File, and
miscellaneous other "protection" for many years, I dumped them all and now
have the following:

Microsoft Security Essentials
Windows Firewall

I do a weekly a full scan with:

Malwarebytes
SUPERAntiSpyware

Typically, MWB finds nothing and SAS finds the same harmless tracking
cookie.

My DELL Inspiron 530 (XP SP3) is "squeaky clean", boots in about 45 seconds
and shuts down in about 11 seconds.

This anti-virus, anti-spyware configuration, updated regularly works super
for me, seems to keep me well protected and is all freeware.

As always,

I'm sure that's what it is.

It may be scanning. At the very least, it's updating. Norton has a
reputation for hogging resources. Supposedly, it's not as bad as it once
was. But I would never let it touch my PC.

I am sure if you were to uninstall it and use alternative methods to
keep your PC secure, you would not experience long bootup times.

Out of curiosity, once the bootup is complete and things "settle," how
is your performance?

You can configure a Clean Boot and systematically re-enable programs and
processes:
