Default Reinstall problem

Reinstall problem,

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 that I had to do a complete reinstall
using the newly purchased Windows XP upgrade version. I did a complete
disk reformat during the installation. Before I could complete the
installation I got this message.

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk
hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk
configuration in your hardware reference manuals for additional
information."

So, I went back in and did a "quick" format and booted to the Windows
disk and this time everything went well. It asked me for a full
version of Windows which I used my old Windows 95 and everything
installed as it should have.

The problem I'm having now is when I boot the computer I get two
choices of "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition", the first will boot to
Windows after X. number of seconds on its own or if I hit enter
immediately Windows will boot immediately.

The second "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" will not boot and I get
this message;

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk
hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk
configuration in your hardware reference manuals for additional
information."

Is it possible to removing the second "Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" from the boot menu?

Thank You

Albert

Yes. Edit it out in boot.ini. You can do so with Notepad or...

Ctrl + R
Type msconfig
Go to the boot.ini tab
Press the "Check all boot paths" tab

IIRC, that will remove the entry from the failed install.

Do you have two C:\Windows folders?
If not then:

Start/Run/msconfig (this open the System Configuration Utility.
Select the BOOT.INI tab
Click on the 'Check All Boot Paths' button.

If Msconfig finds an invalid path (you indicated you have two)
it will ask you to delete the invalid path.
