This thing called Usenet/newsgroups is probbaly older than you, the kids
today are not aware but if it wasn't for Newsgroups I'd be in megatrouble
selling on Ebay.
You need a real Newsreader for it like good old OutlookExpress or
WindowsVista's "Windowsmail" or Thunderbird, finally - your Internet
provider should offer
Newsgroups server (NNTP protocol). HOWEVER recently IS's been dropping NNTP
in order to force customers to pay for it to thrid-parties, as it doesn't
make them profit.
HOWEVER the good news now Google took over & NNTP service from your ISP is
not longer a hard requirement, though it's still would be best if you get
NNTP.
What is now possible is:
Many people started using Google to post on Newsgorups - goto www.google.com
& from
top menu which says "more" click & select "GROUPS".
All you need is an email address to register and yoiu can post all over the
world as if it were a real NNTP, if you SPAM you get reported to where youre
email domain is, if you persist & use fantom "drive-by-night" addresses e.g.
@yahoo, your IP will be tracked and you'll suffer consequences.
But the problem with Google is it's using Web interface and frankly it's a
lame
way to access Newsgroups, its purpose is trictly to help peopel whose ISP's
dropped NNTP service.
But at least it's free!!!!
Yes nowadays you also see lots of spam on NNTP/USenet Newsgroups,
nevertheless it works for me.
Just make sure to use a NON-primary email address because you yourself may
start
receiving spam as a result of posting on public forums with a valid email
which Google seems to require (unlike true NNTP where everyone is using fake
addresses unless they want personal responses to reach tem instead of a
public Group).
I found great people there, I've traded on 'forsale" newsgroups since 1994
(and as of today it's 15+ YEARS!!!), and I hope Usenet lives on.
